Research Initiation Award

Since the Fall of 2013, Spelman College's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has provided funding for mentored research in the department through the Research Initiation Award, an endowed fund. Chemistry and Biochemistry Scholars are selected each year under this award to serve as research assistants with a faculty mentor.

The students receive a stipend in addition to internship opportunities, travel assistance, and professional development that aligns with the field. Between 2013 and 2024, almost 50 students have participated in this research program with several students participating for more than one year. Students who participated in the program have gone into industry, graduate school, medical school, and other STEM related fields after graduating from Spelman. A small sampling of the students that have matriculated are featured here.
