Scheduling Courses to Complete Your Degree

Course sequences have been prepared as a guide for students and the
advisors who assist students in planning a program of study for the various majors at
the College. Students should consult with Department Chairpersons for answers to
additional questions they may have regarding academic requirements within the
various academic departments.

First year Students - Things You Should Know

New Student Orientation - Login Required

You're a Spelmanite! Welcome to Spelman. Please review these resources for a smooth transition during your first-year.

  • Move-In times will be emailed to you and posted on your checklist in early August.

  • All first-year students need to bring “white attire” for the Induction into the Spelman sisterhood. See the White Dress Tradition.

  • You can major in Elementary Education or add secondary or P-12 teacher certification to select majors.

  • You can major in Photography, Documentary Filmmaking, Dance, and Art History.

  • You can minor in Art History, Curatorial Studies, Photography, and Documentary Filmmaking, Game DEsign and Development, and Data Science and Analytics.

  • Spelman College has a 3+ 3 program with Syracuse University Law School and Drexel University School of Law. The program is only open to Political Science majors at this time.

  • All first-year students must complete the language placement exam? It is strongly recommended that students complete the placement exam by early July. Students who score high on the online exam will be invited for an oral interview. Students who complete the French placement exam are required to complete a written portion of the exam during New Student Orientation.

  • American Sign Language can used to fulfill the language requirement? Spaces in the ASL classes are limited.

  • All first-year students must complete a Math placement exam. Information is posted on the Portal at Placement Examinations.

  • All first-year students must complete a First Year Colloquia course during their first year. Courses and descriptions will be posted on the New Student Orientation site later this summer.

  • All first-year students must complete Community Service hours. Instructions are be found on the New Student Portal under SpelmanServes.

  • Spelman College offers a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Economics, Mathematics and Physics.

  • Spelman College offers a Health Sciences major for student interested in careers in the health professions.

  • The Health Careers Office assists students in gaining admission to health professional institutions? Visit Health Careers for more information and don’t miss their presentation during New Student Orientation.

  • Spelman has an Entrepreneurship and Innovation minor for students interested in business.

  • Spelman has an Innovation Lab. Visit spelmanil.org for more information on the Innovation Lab.

  • Spelman has  Student Handbook and Resource Guide with your rights and responsibilities as a Spelman student, and other important information to support your success on our campus.

Student Organizations

Did you know Spelman offers more than 70 student organizations and sororities to make your experience here even more enriching? They focus on everything from leadership to academic excellence, diversity and inclusion, civic engagement, community service, dance, performing arts, production, leadership, media, professional, religious, political and social justice initiatives, and special interests. Our calendar of events is also filled with a variety of activities throughout the academic year.

You Are Part of the Finest Institutions!

Along with its member institutions in the Atlanta University Center Consortium, Spelman shares cross-registration, the Woodruff Library, and a range of entertainment and engagement that complements anyone’s academic learning experience.

Atlanta has the largest concentration of colleges and universities in the Southern U.S., as a matter of fact, and students from Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, Agnes Scott College, Georgia State University, and Oglethorpe University are all encouraged to engage in a cultural and civic community. All these universities are located within 20 or 30 minutes by car, bus or train.
